A special message from the Pack Committee ...

The pack is all about family.  Sharing and participating in pack activities and events as a family brings more meaning to the Cub Scout experience for your son.  Enriching experiences don’t happen by themselves, however.  We need families to help put together the fun and exciting events we offer.  We especially need new parents to bring new ideas to the table. Just a few hours here and there can make all the difference.  Contact Jack to join the fun!

Committee members – We are forming committees now for the Pinewood Derby and the Blue and Gold Banquet.  No experience necessary.  Just a few hours is all we need.

Our meetings ...
The Pack Committee consists of the Den leaders, our Cubmaster, and any parent.  Pack Committee meetings are usually held on the Sunday before the Pack meetings at 7 p.m. in the Aspen House.

Pack 234 Committee meeting, 7 p.m. April 19, 2009, Aspen House

In attendance: Tim O'Reilley, Mike Bryant, Chris Iven

* The "Scouting for Food" event Saturday went well, according to those who participated. Scouts and their parents collected about $110 worth of returnables plus a few hundred pounds of food. Both the food and cash were donated to P.E.A.C.E. Inc. Our thanks go to Nancy Gaus, who organized the donations. The kids who participated seemed to like this project. One boy asked to do it every month. We said we'd consider doing something similar this fall.

* Nancy Gaus, who stopped by the committee meeting, told us about the Radisson Earth Day Cleanup April 26. It's a great way for the cubs to perform some community service. Just show up at the Aspen House around noon and your group will be assigned an area to clean up. The event lasts until 2 p.m.

* While there, Nancy suggested we organize a pack hike in May. A hike at Clark State Reservation last May was a hit, she said. WE NEED A PARENT TO VOLUNTEER TO ORGANIZE THIS.

* By consensus, we agreed to move the next Pack Committtee meeting from May 10 (Mothers Day) to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7.

* We encourage all Pack 234 families to attend the Hiawatha Seaway Council family campout June 13-14 at Camp Woodland. It will be fun for your family, and it will be even more fun if several families from our pack can attend. Here's a flyer: http://www.cnyscouts.org/downloads/2009_FamilyCampingFlyer.pdf This thing fills up fast, so call 463-0201 to register as soon as possible.

* By consensus, we agreed to look into our pack adopting a plot or two or three at the Radisson community gardens. If it works out, we would launch the project by having the boys plant pumpkin and sunflower seeds at our April 26 pack meeting. On the afternoon of May 16, our pack will meet at the community gardens to plant our seedlings. The Bear/Wolf Den will meet at the garden in mid-June to tend the garden plot. The Webelos den will get July and the Tiger den would get August. The pack would harvest in September or October and use what we grow during some event we'll figure out later. Cubs and their families will be encouraged to check in on the plot throughout the summer to weed, water, etc.

* The group developed a rough plan for the April 26 pack meeting:
Opening: Webelos den
Game: led by Bear/Wolf den
Updates: - Food drive (Chris)
- fire department visit (Tim)
- knots (Chris and Bear/Wolf cubs)
- Anything else?
Awards: - Tiger tracks (Tiger den)
- Whittling chit (Bear/Wolf den)
- Anything else?
Activity: - Plant and water seeds
Future events: - May 16 seed planting
- Memorial Day parade
- Family Campout
- Anything else?
Closing: Webelos Den

* We didn't discuss the draft pack financial policy. Please check it out and come to the next committee meeting May 7 to share your views. Or, if you can't make it and you have any concerns, please pass them along to someone who will be attending.

* The Pack Committee is made up of people like you - Cub Scout parents - who show up to help the pack go. Please mark your calendars to attend the next meeting at 7 p.m. May 7. Good ideas are always welcome.

- Chris Iven
